Custom home — cathedral ceilings, stone great room and a wine cellar
A large custom build with the details that make insulation difficult and make it matter: double-height stone walls, exposed beams, a cathedral ceiling with no depth to spare, walls of glass onto the pool deck, and a climate-controlled wine cellar that has to hold its temperature and humidity year-round.
Rooms like these are why we do not quote one product for a whole house. A cathedral ceiling has a fixed rafter depth and no room for a batt thick enough to reach code, so it needs R-value per inch. A wine room needs an airtight, vapour-controlled envelope or it will never hold its conditions. The big glazed walls put cold surfaces right beside living space, so every framing detail around them has to be sealed.
